Hydrogen Sulphide Filter with Clack WS1 CI Valve

The Hydrogen Sulphide Filter with Clack WS1 CI Valve is an automatic water treatment system designed to reduce hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) from residential and commercial water supplies. Hydrogen sulphide is commonly responsible for the distinctive “rotten egg” odour sometimes found in borehole, well and private water supplies.

The system combines air draw aeration with CTX-L1000 catalytic activated carbon. During operation, water first passes through an air pocket at the top of the pressure vessel before flowing through the catalytic carbon bed. The additional oxygen helps oxidise hydrogen sulphide, while the catalytic carbon provides enhanced adsorption and catalytic activity for effective taste and odour control. This oxidation stage can also help increase carbon capacity and extend media life compared with conventional activated carbon filtration.

The filter is controlled by the reliable Clack WS1 CI automatic control valve, which carries out a programmed backwash cycle and automatically replenishes the air pocket used for hydrogen sulphide oxidation.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Designed specifically for the removal of hydrogen sulphide and rotten egg odours

  • Combines air oxidation and catalytic activated carbon filtration

  • Uses premium CTX-L1000 12 × 40 catalytic activated carbon

  • Automatic Clack WS1 CI electronic control valve

  • Air draw system helps maintain an oxygen-rich air pocket above the media

  • Automatic programmable backwashing

  • Helps improve the taste and odour of affected water supplies

  • Suitable for domestic, commercial and private water applications

  • Supplied partially assembled and programmed in our workshop

  • Available in several vessel sizes to suit different flow requirements

The CTX-L1000 media has a high published surface area of 1,100 m²/g and combines conventional activated carbon adsorption with enhanced catalytic activity. Its published applications include hydrogen sulphide control, chloramine removal, iron oxidation, sulphite oxidation, hydrogen peroxide removal and hydrazine removal.

Available Models

Vessel Size Media Recommended Maximum Service Flow Backwash Flow
10" × 54" 15 kg 0.4 m³/h 0.7 m³/h
13" × 54" 25 kg 0.8 m³/h 1.2 m³/h
14" × 65" 50 kg 1.0 m³/h 1.4 m³/h
16" × 65" 75 kg 1.4 m³/h 1.7 m³/h

All models use the Clack WS1 CI valve.

Automatic Backwash & Air Recharge

The Clack WS1 CI valve provides automatic control of the filter and can be programmed to backwash at predetermined intervals. The standard configuration is set to backwash every three days at 2:00 am, with a 16-minute backwash duration, although these settings can be adjusted to suit the application.

During the cycle, the air draw arrangement replenishes the air pocket within the vessel. This provides additional oxygen to support the oxidation of hydrogen sulphide before the water passes through the catalytic carbon bed.

Operating Conditions

The system is designed for inlet pressures between 2 and 6 bar and water temperatures from 4°C to 43°C. Electrical consumption is very low, with a maximum power rating of just 6 W.

Periodic replacement of the catalytic carbon will eventually be required. Media life will vary depending on hydrogen sulphide concentration, overall water quality, water consumption and other contaminants present in the supply.

Choosing the Correct Hydrogen Sulphide Filter

Correct system sizing is important for effective hydrogen sulphide removal. Treatment performance depends on factors including:

  • Hydrogen sulphide concentration

  • Water pH and general chemistry

  • Required service flow rate

  • Iron and manganese levels

  • Other contaminants within the water

For water with higher hydrogen sulphide concentrations or significant levels of iron or manganese, we recommend providing a recent water analysis before ordering so that we can confirm the most appropriate system size and treatment configuration.

Typical Applications

This hydrogen sulphide removal filter is suitable for:

  • Borehole water

  • Well water

  • Private water supplies

  • Domestic properties

  • Farms and rural properties

  • Commercial water supplies

  • Applications affected by persistent sulphurous or rotten egg odours

Why Choose a Clack WS1 CI Hydrogen Sulphide Filter?

The combination of a Clack WS1 CI automatic valve, air oxidation and CTX-L1000 catalytic activated carbon provides a simple and highly practical approach to hydrogen sulphide treatment. Unlike a standard carbon filter, the air pocket provides an additional oxidation stage before filtration, helping the catalytic carbon deal more effectively with sulphide-related taste and odour problems.

For assistance selecting the correct system, please provide your maximum required flow rate and recent water analysis, particularly the hydrogen sulphide, iron, manganese and pH results.
