Question 1

What is a standard water filter housing?

Accepted Answer

A standard water filter housing is a reusable pressure housing designed to hold a replaceable water filter cartridge. Standard housings are commonly used for domestic, commercial and light industrial water filtration and can accommodate cartridges for sediment removal, chlorine reduction and a wide range of specialist water treatment applications.

Question 2

What size cartridges fit standard filter housings?

Accepted Answer

Standard housings generally accept cartridges approximately 2.5” to 2.75” in diameter. The most common lengths are 10” and 20”, although other lengths are available for certain applications. Always check the cartridge and housing dimensions before ordering.

Question 3

What is the difference between a 10” and 20” standard filter housing?

Accepted Answer

A 20” housing accepts a cartridge approximately twice the length of a standard 10” cartridge. This normally provides greater filtration surface area or media capacity, potentially increasing cartridge life and allowing higher flow rates depending on the cartridge selected.

Question 4

What is the difference between Standard and Large Diameter filter housings?

Accepted Answer

Standard housings normally use cartridges approximately 2.5”–2.75” in diameter, while Large Diameter housings typically use cartridges around 4.5” in diameter. Large Diameter cartridges offer substantially more filtration area and capacity, making them better suited to higher-flow and whole-house applications.

Question 5

Are standard filter housings suitable for whole-house filtration?

Accepted Answer

They can be used for smaller whole-house applications, but the required flow rate and cartridge pressure drop must be considered carefully. For properties with higher peak flow requirements, a 20” Standard or Large Diameter housing may be more appropriate.

Question 6

What types of cartridges can I put in a standard housing?

Accepted Answer

Standard housings are extremely versatile. Depending on the housing and application, cartridges are available for sediment, chlorine, taste and odour, scale, iron, nitrate, fluoride, deionisation and other specialist applications. For example, GAPS stocks 2.5” × 10” activated alumina cartridges specifically designed to fit standard 10” housings.

Question 7

Can I use a sediment cartridge in a standard filter housing?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sediment filtration is one of the most common uses for standard housings. Polypropylene, wound and pleated cartridges are available in various micron ratings to remove sand, rust, silt and suspended particles. GAPS stocks standard sediment cartridges in a range of micron ratings.

Question 8

What micron filter should I choose?

Accepted Answer

The correct micron rating depends on the water quality and what you are trying to remove. Coarser cartridges such as 20, 25 or 50 micron filters are useful for larger particles and pre-filtration, while 5 or 10 micron cartridges provide finer sediment removal. Very fine cartridges may block more quickly where the incoming water contains significant sediment.

Question 9

Can I use a carbon filter in a standard housing?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Standard housings can accommodate compatible carbon block, granular activated carbon and specialist carbon cartridges. These may be used for applications including chlorine, taste and odour reduction. Always check the cartridge’s recommended flow rate and capacity when sizing the system.

Question 10

Can standard filter housings be used on borehole or well water?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Standard housings are frequently used as pre-filters on borehole, well and spring water systems. A sediment cartridge can help protect downstream equipment such as water softeners, media filters, reverse osmosis systems and UV units.

Question 11

Will a standard filter housing make borehole water safe to drink?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. A filter housing only provides the treatment capability of the cartridge installed inside it. Sediment filtration alone does not remove all dissolved contaminants or provide disinfection. Private water supplies should be tested so that the appropriate treatment equipment can be selected.

Question 12

Can I install more than one standard filter housing?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Multiple housings can be installed in series to create a staged filtration system. For example, a coarse sediment filter could be followed by a finer sediment cartridge and then an activated carbon filter.

Question 13

Should the coarser or finer filter come first?

Accepted Answer

When using multiple sediment cartridges, filtration would normally progress from coarse to fine. For example, a 25-micron cartridge could be installed before a 5-micron cartridge. This allows larger particles to be captured first and can help extend the service life of the finer downstream filter.

Question 14

What flow rate can a standard filter housing handle?

Accepted Answer

The usable flow rate is determined by both the housing and the cartridge installed inside it. Although a housing may have a relatively high maximum flow capability, a carbon, fine sediment or specialist treatment cartridge may have a much lower recommended service flow.

Question 15

Will installing a filter housing reduce my water pressure?

Accepted Answer

Some pressure loss is unavoidable when water passes through a filter cartridge. The amount depends on the cartridge type, micron rating, flow rate and how contaminated the cartridge has become. A significant increase in pressure drop can indicate that the cartridge requires replacement.

Question 16

How do I know when my filter cartridge needs replacing?

Accepted Answer

A noticeable reduction in flow or water pressure can indicate that a sediment cartridge has become loaded. Replacement intervals for carbon and specialist cartridges should also consider their rated capacity and the manufacturer’s recommended service life.

Question 17

How often should I change a standard sediment filter?

Accepted Answer

There is no universal replacement interval because cartridge life depends heavily on water quality and consumption. As a general guide, some standard polypropylene sediment cartridges are recommended for replacement every 3–6 months, but heavily contaminated water may require considerably more frequent replacement.

Question 18

What is the difference between clear and opaque filter housings?

Accepted Answer

A clear housing bowl allows the cartridge to be visually inspected without opening the housing, which can be particularly useful with sediment filters. Opaque housings prevent light from reaching the cartridge and are generally preferable where the housing could be exposed to daylight.

Question 19

Can a clear filter housing be installed in sunlight?

Accepted Answer

Clear housings should ideally be protected from direct sunlight. Light entering the housing can encourage biological or algal growth where suitable conditions exist. The housing should also always be installed within the manufacturer’s specified environmental and temperature limits.

Question 20

Do standard filter housings need to be installed vertically?

Accepted Answer

Most standard cartridge housings are designed to be installed vertically with the bowl below the filter head. This ensures correct cartridge positioning and makes cartridge replacement and servicing easier.

Question 21

Do I need a mounting bracket for a standard filter housing?

Accepted Answer

A mounting bracket is recommended where specified by the manufacturer. The housing becomes significantly heavier when filled with water, and supporting it correctly prevents the connected pipework from carrying unnecessary mechanical load.

Question 22

Which direction should water flow through the filter housing?

Accepted Answer

Always follow the IN and OUT markings on the filter head. Correct flow direction is particularly important with carbon and specialist cartridges where the internal construction may be designed for a specific direction of flow.

Question 23

Should I turn the water off before changing a cartridge?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Isolate the water supply and safely relieve the pressure inside the housing before attempting to unscrew the bowl. Many housings incorporate a pressure-relief button to assist with servicing.

Question 24

Why is my filter housing difficult to unscrew?

Accepted Answer

A housing can become difficult to open if it is still pressurised, has been overtightened or if the O-ring has become dry or incorrectly seated. Always isolate and depressurise the housing before using the correct housing spanner.

Question 25

Should I replace the O-ring when changing the filter?

Accepted Answer

The O-ring does not necessarily need replacing at every cartridge change, but it should always be inspected. Replace it if it is cut, stretched, flattened, hardened or otherwise damaged.

Question 26

Can I lubricate the filter housing O-ring?

Accepted Answer

Where lubrication is recommended, use a suitable food-grade silicone lubricant compatible with the O-ring material. Avoid petroleum-based lubricants unless specifically approved by the housing manufacturer.

Question 27

Are cartridges from different manufacturers interchangeable?

Accepted Answer

Many standard 10” and 20” cartridges use common industry dimensions and can therefore fit housings from different manufacturers. However, compatibility should always be checked because actual cartridge dimensions, end configurations and sealing arrangements can vary.

Question 28

Can a standard housing be used before a UV system?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Cartridge filtration is commonly installed upstream of UV disinfection. Removing suspended particles and turbidity helps ensure that the water reaching the UV chamber is suitable for effective UV treatment. The required pre-filtration should be determined by the incoming water quality and UV manufacturer’s requirements.

Question 29

Can a standard filter housing be used before reverse osmosis?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Standard housings are widely used for RO pre-treatment. Sediment and carbon cartridges can protect RO membranes from particulate contamination and, where appropriate, chlorine.

Question 30

How do I choose the right standard filter housing?

Accepted Answer

Consider the required cartridge length, connection size, flow rate, operating pressure, water temperature, cartridge type and available installation space. The cartridge’s recommended flow rate and pressure drop should also be considered rather than selecting the housing based solely on its connection size.

Question 31

When should I choose a Large Diameter housing instead?

Accepted Answer

Consider a Large Diameter housing when you need higher flow rates, greater dirt-holding capacity, longer cartridge life or lower pressure drop. They are particularly useful for whole-house and higher-demand applications where a standard 2.5” diameter cartridge would be too restrictive.
