Birm is a highly effective filter media for removing iron and manganese from water. To ensure optimal performance, the water's pH should be maintained at 7 or higher for iron removal and 8 or higher for manganese removal. Birm utilizes dissolved oxygen in the water to oxidize the metals, making them easier to capture. Unlike some other filter media, Birm acts as a catalyst, meaning it's not consumed in the process and doesn't require regeneration or replenishment.

In addition to iron and manganese removal, Birm can also effectively reduce turbidity. However, it's important to avoid using Birm in conjunction with chlorination, as chlorine can interfere with its efficiency. Moreover, the water should be free of oil and hydrogen sulfide.

To ensure Birm operates efficiently, the water must contain at least 15% dissolved oxygen relative to the combined iron and manganese content. If the water's pH is too low, pH correction may be necessary to achieve optimal results.

How Birm Works:

  1. Oxidation: When iron and manganese come into contact with Birm, it catalyzes the oxidation of these metals into insoluble forms.
  2. Adsorption: The oxidized iron and manganese are then adsorbed onto the surface of the Birm particles.
  3. Removal: During the backwash process, the adsorbed iron and manganese are removed from the filter bed.

Key Benefits of Using Birm for Iron and Manganese Removal:

  • Effective Removal: Birm is highly effective at removing both iron and manganese from water, even at low concentrations.
  • Durability: Birm is a durable material that can withstand repeated regeneration cycles.
  • Versatility: Birm can also be used for other water treatment applications, such as turbidity removal and taste and odor control.

Factors to Consider:

  • Water Quality: The concentration of iron and manganese in the water will determine the required amount of Birm and the frequency of regeneration.
  • pH: Birm works best in a slightly acidic pH range (7.0-8.0).
  • Temperature: Higher temperatures can improve the oxidation of iron and manganese.

If you're considering using Birm for iron and manganese removal, it's recommended to consult with GAPS Water Treatment to determine the appropriate dosage and operating conditions.
