ScaleStop TAC20BB 20 Inch BB Salt-Free Limescale Prevention System
Technical Resources
Technical Resources
ScaleStop TAC20BB is a salt-free limescale prevention system designed to help protect domestic plumbing, water heaters, boilers and appliances from hard scale deposits. Using Template Assisted Crystallisation (TAC), it reduces the tendency of dissolved hardness minerals to form deposits, without salt, electricity, chemical dosing or wastewater from regeneration.
Key benefits
- Salt-free scale protection for suitably sized domestic and light commercial installations.
- Low-maintenance operation: no electrical connection, brine tank, drain or regeneration cycle.
- Retains natural minerals: calcium and magnesium remain in the water rather than being exchanged for sodium.
- Replaceable C20B cartridge with a recommended change interval of up to 24 months for domestic and other non-food-service applications.
- 1" BSP female connections with a maximum constant flow rating of 16 litres/minute and short-duration peak flow of 22 litres/minute.
How Template Assisted Crystallisation works
TAC media provides nucleation sites that encourage dissolved scale-forming minerals to form microscopic crystals which remain suspended in the flowing water rather than forming hard deposits on surfaces. This helps protect heating surfaces and plumbing components against limescale build-up.
Important: the TAC20BB is a scale prevention system, not a conventional water softener. It does not remove calcium or magnesium or reduce the measured hardness of the water. It is also not a carbon, sediment or microbiological purification filter.

Installation and maintenance
Install vertically in an accessible, frost-free location on a cold-water supply, following the marked flow direction (left to right). Full-bore isolating valves before and after the system are recommended. Allow a minimum of 80 mm beneath the housing to remove the sump during cartridge replacement. The system must not be used in conjunction with polyphosphate or other scale-inhibition treatments, and must not be used on microbiologically unsafe or unknown-quality water without appropriate disinfection.
Maintenance consists primarily of replacing the C20B cartridge at the recommended interval and checking/replacing the housing O-ring when necessary. Correct system sizing is essential; do not design a continuous-duty installation to operate at its maximum flow rating.
